Spine Consult
There is a first medical evaluation with clinical history (current complaints, treatments performed and results, health history (including medication you are taking), exams already done and results) and a thorough physical examination. At the end of this evaluation, it is verified whether the exams already performed are sufficient or if some additional examination (usually an MRI of the spine) is necessary.
If an examination is necessary this is done on the same day.
A medical evaluation is followed by a spine surgeon who, in the possession of all the data previously collected, conveys a therapeutic proposal. Thus the patient leaves the clinic with a diagnosis and a treatment proposal already defined.
A report of the consultation is then prepared and sent to be transmitted to your attending physician.
The great challenge in spinal diseases is to discover the cause of the pains, because only treating the cause will obtain the best result. This is not a simple challenge since:
– there are many structures in the spine that can cause pain (intervertebral discs, nerves, posterior joints or facets, muscles, bone itself in case of fracture);
– changes in these structures are normal with age, so the fact that an examination reveals them does not necessarily mean that they are the cause of the pain;
– Emotional factors are also very important and can amplify and make pain more unbearable.
